Winner of Best Oak Frame Home at the 2024 Build It Awards
Hedgerows is a striking home that celebrates its oak frame. Long-time collaborators Oakwrights and PJT Design have excelled to create a spectacular countryside house, tailored to its woodland plot and delivering exactly what the client wanted: “an oak frame farmhouse with a modern twist.”
The H-shaped main floorplan, with central entrance projection, creates a stunning triple-ridge roof that defines the external architecture. The stepped facade, multiple glazed gables and single-storey kitchen wing (featuring oversailing veranda) all work in perfect harmony to enhance and balance the design, while the external materials “were selected on how gently they would look against the landscape,” say the self builders.
At design stage, Oakwrights produced a full 3D virtual tour, so the owners could assess the layout and flow between rooms. Internally, the curved floating staircase is a wow feature, beautifully integrated into the oak architecture.
Future-proofing was built into the project. A downstairs study can transform into an ensuite bedroom, while a lift has been installed up to first floor level. Oakwrights’ WrightWall and WrightRoof insulating encapsulating panels ensure great energy performance, too. “We love rooflines, and Oakwrights gave us the freedom to make the house as interesting as possible,” say the owners. “It’s even better than we dreamed.”
