We have a single skin brick garage, for which we have planning permission to take the roof off, bring in some extra height before replacing the roof and making the upstairs a storage area and office etc. We want to insulate the outside walls before covering with black wooden shiplap cladding, but we're finding it difficult to get info from people about our options. We are aware of the straightforward option of putting wooden battens to the brickwork and then insulating between them, but have seen pictures of metal frameworks that can be attached to the brickwork and perhaps larger sheets of insulation before installing breather paper and our wooden cladding. However, nobody is able to talk us through the options, and I have tried builders merchants and insulation suppliers.
Hi PJ,
Thanks for your question.
Our eco and sustainability expert Nigel Griffiths has answered a similar question to yours here, which has some helpful advice on retrofitting insulation in an outbuilding that he recommends consulting.
Best wishes,
